[Notice] Upcoming Changes to Airtame App Support on macOS
Apple is continuing its transition toward its own silicon (M-series chips), and as part of this evolution, support for older "Intel-based" applications is being phased out in future versions of macOS.
The current Airtame desktop app for macOS is built on an Intel-based architecture. While it remains fully functional today, we are proactively sharing information about the upcoming native application designed specifically for the modern macOS devices.
What is changing?
Apple has announced that the version of macOS scheduled for release in September 2027 will no longer support Intel-based (x86) applications.
But already today, the users of the current macOS - Tahoe 26.4 and newer - will see warnings that the app will soon not be supported: "Support Ending for Intel-based Apps. This version of "Airtame" will not open in a future release of macOS"
What does this mean for you?
- Before September 2027: The current Airtame app will continue to work exactly as it does today on all macOS versions, including the forthcoming macOS 27 - via Rosetta 2 on Apple Silicon Macs (M1-M5)
- After September 2027: The current version of the Airtame app will not launch on the macOS 28 planned for release at that time. To continue using Airtame on the latest operating system, users will need to switch to our upcoming native application.
Timeline and Roadmap
We want to ensure a seamless transition for all our users. Here is the current roadmap for app availability:
- Now – Late 2026: Full support and updates continue for the existing Intel-based Airtame app.
- Q4 2026: We will release the new native ARM-based Airtame application and start the transition to the new application. This version will cover all primary use cases, including screen sharing and conferencing support
- H1 2027: We will continue to improve the ARM-based Airtame application and expand the supported functionality
- Late 2027: with macOS 28 release, Apple drops support for Intel apps. The new Airtame app becomes the primary version for macOS users.
We are actively working on a brand-new application architecture. It will not just be a compatibility update; the new app is being built from the ground up to be faster and more efficient:
- Improved startup times and lower CPU usage on Apple Silicon.
- Native code means better battery life for your MacBook while presenting.
- Designed to integrate more deeply with the latest macOS security and sharing features.
The first version of this new app, which includes all core screen-sharing functionalities, is expected to be available for download in Q4 2026.
Alternative Ways to Share Screen and Manage Devices
If you are managing a fleet of Macs and are concerned about the transition, remember that Airtame offers several "app-less" ways to share screen that do not rely on the desktop application:
- Airtame Browser Sharing: Visit airtame.com/go to share a tab or window directly (also allows to join calls).
- AirPlay: Native support for macOS and iOS (no app required).
- Google Cast: Share directly from the Chrome browser.
For more information on these features, see our guides: How to share with Native protocols and How to screen share from a browser
In terms of device setup and management functionality, Airtame desktop app is already not mandatory for the majority of administrative tasks. We have shifted toward a "Cloud-first" approach to make deployment easier for IT administrators:
- App-less Setup: New Airtame devices can be set up and joined to your network without needing the desktop application installed on your computer.
- Cloud Management: Most device settings can be managed directly via Airtame Cloud.
