TL;DR
- At launch: Airtame 3 will receive an update enabling Miracast in Beta very shortly after launch.
- Coming next: AirPlay (screen mirroring/extended desktop), expected in early 2026.
- Planned: Google Cast, including media playback (first time on the Airtame platform for Cast).
- Meanwhile: The Airtame apps (browser, mobile, and desktop) remain the fastest, most consistent way to connect.
- Existing devices: Airtame 2 and Airtame Hub keep their current support for Miracast, AirPlay, and Google Cast (powered by AirServer); they are not affected by this change.
What are native protocols?
Native protocols are the built-in technologies many devices use to share their screen or media without installing extra software. The three most common ones are Miracast, AirPlay, and Google Cast — all of which let users connect to a display over the network using tools already included in their operating system.
Users can connect right away with the workflows they already know, whether they’re using Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, or ChromeOS. Each technology also offers a few unique capabilities: Miracast and AirPlay support extended desktop mode for presenters who need to show one thing on the display and another on their laptop, while AirPlay and Google Cast allow media playback — streaming a video directly to the screen instead of mirroring it from the device.
What’s changing on Airtame 3?
Since 2017 we’ve supported native protocols through third-party integrations. On Airtame 3, we’re rebuilding Miracast, AirPlay, and Google Cast natively for better management, enablement of new features, and compatibility across the Airtame platform (including future Virtual Airtame deployments on select third-party hardware).
This new implementation will roll out in stages to ensure quality and clear admin controls.
Availability on Airtame 3
| Protocol | Launch status | What it covers initially | Notes / limits at launch |
| Miracast | Beta (at launch) | Screen mirroring; extended desktop on Windows | Beta label: behavior may change; we’re actively collecting feedback. |
| AirPlay | Coming soon after launch | Screen mirroring; extended desktop on macOS | Media playback via AirPlay will follow the staged rollout. |
| Google Cast | Planned | Screen mirroring; media playback planned | First time we bring Cast media playback to Airtame. Timeline to be announced. |
Important: Exact feature scope and OS support may evolve during rollout. We’ll publish release notes for each update.
What should I use today?
For the most consistent experience across Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, iOS, and Android, use the Airtame apps (browser, desktop, or mobile). We’ll continue improving app performance in parallel with native protocol releases.
What about Airtame 2 and Airtame Hub?
The AirServer-powered Miracast, AirPlay, and Google Cast integrations on Airtame 2 and Airtame Hub continue as they are.
