Airtame relies heavily on your network's performance and coverage. You will see  symptoms like stream disconnects, lag, bad quality and choppiness when information is lost during transmission between the computer, router/AP and Airtame. This is what the stream is supposed to look like:

What is causing this problem?

There are many reasons why the network connection may fall short and it's difficult to pinpoint one single cause. However, we've found these to be the most common issues:

  • The Distance between Airtame and the Router/AP is too big.
  • There are signal blockers like walls, furniture or people.
  • Interference from other wireless products.
  • The WiFi Router is outdated or badly configured.

Easy improvements 

  1. Reboot the router (Believe it or not, restarting it fixes many issues).
  2. Check your router doesn't have any power saving settings enabled. This will potentially increase network latency.
  3. Check that Airtame is placed as close as possible to the side of the screen pointing towards the Router. TV's block Wifi so use the HDMI extender.
  4. Placing your router above head level and as close as possible to "line of sight" with Airtame.
  5. Use a WiFi scanning App to find and set your router's WiFi to use a less saturated band and channel.

Here you can see the results of a wifi scan. The 5GHz band has less WiFi's on it and some channels that only have 1 other WiFi, this means that there will be less interference if your router is using this channel.

Many WiFi scanning Apps also include a graph to show signal strength and interference (Noise) of a specific WiFi.

It may be necessary to buy a longer HDMI extension cord, if there are no HDMI ports close to the side of the TV. Look for cables like this.

Other Solutions

Upgrade your WiFi Router

If your WiFi equipment is more than 3 years old, better streaming performance with Airtame would be just one of the many possible benefits of upgrading your Router to a newer and faster model. The most important factor when buying new equipment is that it supports the newer 5GHz standard that was introduced when the old 2.4GHz started getting too crowded. 

Follow this checklist:

Does your Router support 5GHz? 

👍 Great! Go to the next question.

👎 Consider buying a new router that supports this standard. In most cases, a mid-range Router priced at around $100-150 USD will do the job.  

Is your Router placed less than 30 feet (10 m) away from Airtame? 

👍 Great! Go to the next question.

👎 Find a way to place your Router more central and closer to the TV

 Are there fewer than two walls between your Router and Airtame?

👍 Great! Go to the next question.

👎 More walls equals more interference. Buy a WiFi extender and place it between the Router and the TV.

 Do you see a difference in signal strength on your computer than on Airtame?

👍 Great! Go to the next question.

👎 Consider repositioning your router or using a Wifi extender.

 

Use an Ethernet Adapter with Airtame

Airtame allows for a wired ethernet connection between router/switch using an ethernet adapter. Users will still be streaming wirelessly through the network so this may not solve the entire problem but the Airtame will be more stable and responsive on the backend.

 

Test the network connection

There are many easy ways to test and monitor the quality of a WiFi network. This guide will give insight into whether the network is what is negatively influencing the Airtame stream. 

Ping Airtame from your computer

When you "Ping", your computer sends a unique request to another device on the same network and waits for a reply for that specific request, displaying the time it waited before it got a reply. This is a quick and easy way to test the quality and speed of the network.

What to look for

  • How many ms it takes for the computer to get a reply
  • How much it fluctuates - If the ping is, for example, jumping hundreds of ms once in a while
  • Packet loss

Matrix to evaluate your results

<10 ms Perfect latency and quality
10-50 ms A bit of latency and fine quality
50 - 200 ms Noticeable latency and quality reduction
>200 ms Dropouts, bad quality, and definite latency.     

Healthy packet loss is ≤ 1.0%

 

Windows network ping test

  1. Search for "CMD" and open
  2. Type "ping + Your device IP address -n 20"

 

Mac network ping test 

  1. Open "Terminal" (Search or find in your application/utilities folder)
  2. Type "ping" followed by the IP of your device with a spacing between.
